In honor of Children’s Day, a day set aside to celebrate and promote awareness among children worldwide, international togetherness and improving children’s welfare. What way to foster that than to be a better parent? As a parent, you are the first human contact and role model a child has.

In this article, you will learn how to improve your parenting skills for better results in children and the world at large.

  1. Be the person you want your child to be

Your children will watch and imitate things they see you do. Your behavior influences their decisions and actions. Lead by example, show them the same behavior you want to see in them.

2. Teach values not rules

Rather than creating rules, teach them the rights and wrongs. Teach them principles and why they should live by them. Don’t be a ‘’these are the rules and they must be followed’’ kind of parent, rather a ‘’ these are the reasons why you should adopt these principles’’.

3. Encourage and support their life decisions and paths

Let your child express and experience their creative sides, it may be singing, painting, writing, dancing or drawing. Support and encourage them instead of trying to impose your choices on them. It’s best you let them choose their career path and not force them to choose what you want. Also, avoid comparison and labels.

4. Boost your child’s self-esteem

Your words and actions affect your child’s self-esteem more than you think. Choose your words and be kind to them.  Let them know you still love them regardless of their mistakes and that everyone makes mistakes.

5. Make time for your child

Children who don’t get attention from their parents often misbehave or turn out bad. Spend quality time with your children, make them your friends and you, their safe space. It strengthens relationships both indoors and outdoors.

When it comes to parenting, It is the little things that makes the difference. Positive parenting techniques work well in raising children with discipline and good moral values.
